(KRON) -- Two juveniles riding together on an electric stand-up scooter at a high of speed were taken to the hospital Wednesday after colliding with a vehicle, the El Cerrito Police Department said.

The incident occurred at the Ohlone Greenway and Potrero Avenue. Police said neither juvenile was wearing a helmet or had a driver's license.

The e-scooter has a maximum speed of 43 mph, according to its manufacturer, police said.

“The operator of the scooter failed to stop at the stop sign on the Ohlone Greenway and entered the roadway directly into the path of an approaching vehicle,” police said. “Although the driver attempted to stop, the vehicle collided with the scooter and both riders.”

It is unclear whether charges will be filed in connection with the incident.
